SCORES of people in Mutare today participated in a walkathon aimed at raising awareness about the importance of planting trees as a way of combating climate change and get people involved in the initiative.

The event, which was organised by several stakeholders under the banner Friends of the Environment, saw people walking for 12km from Nyanga turn-off into Mutare’s Central Business District holding placards that carried messages which encourage the planting and conservation of trees.

Individuals and corporates took part in the walkathon.

The group then planted over 100 trees along Dangamvura Link Road in line with the event’s initiative.

One of the participants, Melody Gwara, said the importance of tree planting cannot be overemphasised.

“Growing trees should be a culture all communities must embrace. This is important in also protecting the environment while also mitigating the impact of climate change,” she said.

Zimbabwe commemorates National Tree Planting Day every year on the first Saturday of December.
