The Manica Post Senior Reporter — Ray Bande — added another feather on his growing accolades cap after being named the 2020 National Journalism and Media Awards (NJAMA) mining journalist of the year.

The 2020 NJAMA awards were held in Harare early this week under the themed “#DECADEOFACTION: Zim Media for SDGs.’

Bande’s award winning article was headlined ‘Illegal mining robbing future generations’.

In the article, Bande focused on the ravages of illegal gold panning in the Chimanimani Mountain Range vis-a-vis Zimbabwe’s attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The versatile Chipinge-born scribe has won several awards in the environment, energy and sports categories.

Bande said: “I am humbled by this achievement. The year 2020 was a very difficult one for most of us because of the Covid-19 pandemic and ending the year with such a coveted gong is not only my achievement, but the Zimpapers Mutare team.

“I am really thankful to the Editor – Mrs Wendy Nyakurerwa-Matinde – who has given me space to express myself and her confidence in my work.”

Zimpapers, the country’s leading diversified media house dominated Tuesday’s awards ceremony.

The NJAMA awards are the biggest journalism and media awards ceremony in the country.
