ZIFA Eastern Region Division One League newcomers — St Paul’s Musami FC and Huku FC — have started their roller coaster journey in a decent way after registering a win and draw each in their first two outings of the season respectively.
Mutare-based Huku FC, travelled to Marondera last weekend, and beat Surrey FC 2 – 0 in an exciting encounter.
Christian Mukonya, popularly known as Jobho, and Tinashe Muvhundura, fondly known as Tobacco, were on the scoresheet.
The two teams clashed in their opening fixture and shared spoils in an intriguing match played at Manicaland Showgrounds.
St Paul’s Musami went on to shock Mutare City 1 – 0 at the former’s home ground at Manicaland Showgrounds. Both teams in interviews conducted recently, revealed that they are aiming for a top four finish. Speaking after an exciting encounter in Marondera last Saturday, Huku FC chairman, Frank ‘KDB’ Bhunu said they will take each game as it comes.
Bhunu, who is a renowned sports administrator and businessman, said they will not be intimidated by the so-called big boys in the league.
“We have started really well, having garnered four points in two matches. I am sure the boys are gaining confidence with each passing game. We know it will not be a stroll in the park, but we have a lot to prove, especially to the seasoned teams that have known it all in the league.
“We aim to finish the league in top four. We are well-psyched up for the contest and the boys are showing the zeal to shine. We will fight for top honours next season. We have a vibrant junior policy which is a major plus as we aim to conquer Manicaland,” said Bhunu.
Huku FC, which conducts their weekly training at Chisamba Grounds in Sakubva, will host Midway at Showgrounds on Saturday, while St Paul’s Musami will travel to Masvingo for a tricky encounter against a rejuvenated Masvingo United FC at Mucheke Stadium.
St Paul’s Musami head coach, Clifford Dzvairo said although they are aiming at a top four finish, they need to be realistic with their targets.
“We are still building. I think we are not in bad shape. We, however, need to be realistic with our targets. A top four finish will be good, but we can fight for top honours. Our home ground in Murehwa is still being maintained, so we are currently based in Harare. We will return to Murehwa once our ground is in good shape,” said Dzvairo.
