WARD Six Councillor Blessmore Pambureni was on Wednesday elected the new chairman for Rusape Town Council after shrugging of stiff competition from Ward 10 Councillor Peter Clever Kwesha.

Councillor Pambureni of MDC Alliance polled five votes against Councillor Kwesha of Citizens Coalition for Change’s four in an election supervised by Deputy Makoni District Development Coordinator, Mr Darlington Museka.

Councillor Kwesha remains the deputy chairman.

The election was done through a secret ballot.

The post of chairman fell vacant following the recent recalling of former Ward Five Councillor, Mr Lyton Sithole, by his party for defecting to a party that didn’t sponsor him during the 2018 elections.

The opposition is now left with nine councilors, while Zanu PF has one.

In an interview, Councillor Pambureni said he will work hard to ensure that council continues to offer good services to the people.

“I am happy for being chosen as the new chairman of the town, my colleagues showed trust in me. We will put our political differences aside and work for the good of the people who elected us into office. Council is a going concern, I will not try to implement new things. The budget and plans are already there and we will simply follow what was planned before I assume office,” said Councillor Pambureni.

Councillor Kwesha was gracious in defeat and congratulated Councillor Pambureni on his victory.

“At the end of the day when you compete it is not always that you are supposed to be the victor.

‘‘I humbly concede defeat and wish my brother well in his new position. We will work well together,” said Councillor Kwesha.
