WHILE most mothers were celebrating Mother’s Day on Sunday, it was a different story for a 70-year-old woman who is being harassed by her wayward 42-year-old son.
The elderly Mrs Agnes Nyanganyama is now seeking the court’s intervention to restrain her son from harassing her through a protection order.
The matter was heard by Mutare magistrate, Mr Xavier Chipato, who ordered Gerald Nyanganyama to desist from abusing his mother.
Mr Chipato granted a protection order in Mrs Nyanganyama’s favour.
The order will be valid for five years.
Mrs Nyanganyama told the court that her son maltreats her.
“Whenever he visits me, he insults and reminds me that I am not related to him, highlighting that he only has his father’s blood flowing in his veins. Even though I am his biological mother, he argues that I should not have built my house on his late father’s land,” she said.
“He hates me for no apparent reason. People always ask if I am his real mother. His uncouth behaviour towards me makes everyone wonder if I am his biological mother, and that hurts,” said Mrs Nyanganyama.
She also told the court that Gerald harasses her grandchildren.
“He does not care what time it is. He sometimes visits at midnight and insults me and my grandchildren. He is so disrespectful and I am afraid that one day he will assault me,” she said.
ln his defence, Gerald apologised.
“I am naturally a loud person and if my mother takes this as being violent towards her, then I am really sorry. I love my mother so much. I lose my temper here and there but my anger is always directed at my divorced sister, Tendai, who is staying with our mother.
“She wants to be the head of the family, yet she knows that I am the father figure. She is the one manipulating our mother into making this application for a protection order against me,” he said.
Gerald added: “Tendai is cunning, and that is why her husband left her. She wanted to control her husband and was kicked out. Now she is back home and wants to be the family head. I will not let that happen. I am the family’s father figure,” he said.
