NYANGA Rural District Council has acquired 30 hectares of land from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Management to develop residential stands in a swap deal with Nyazengu Farm as it strives to attain town status by 2018.

Nyazengu Farm is in the national park and was earmarked for resettlement of A1 farmers until the council acquired it recently.

Nyanga Rural District Council chief executive officer Mr Jaravaza confirmed the development, saying they were working flat out to meet the growing housing demands. “Our aim is to attain town status by 2018 and we are moving towards that goal by acquiring more land for the expansion of Nyanga village. We need to increase our income avenues in order to capacitate the council,” he said.

He, however, bemoaned failure by residents to honour the servicing of debts accrued from non-payments of rates.

“It is disheartening that ratepayers are not paying rates to council, arguing that we get money from central Government. We are failing to adequately provide services to the residents because of lack of resources,” said Mr Jaravaza.

The new acquired land will see the council availing 493 residential stands.
