SIX people died and about 40 others were  seriously injured when a Tynwald school bus they were traveling on failed to negotiate a sharp curve and crashed at Pine Tree Inn, close to Juliasdale in Nyanga last night.

Five died on the spot while the sixth victim was confirmed dead at Nyanga General Hospital, where sources who spoke on condition of anonymity said the condition of the other injured victims was critical.

The bus, which was on a school trip, belonged to Tynwald School in Harare and had 45 learners and teachers’ children on board.

Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Nobert Muzondo was not readily available for a comment.

However, a police source from Nyanga attributed the accident to speeding.

The source said the driver lost control of the bus which veered off the road and landed in a gorge, killing and injuring the passengers.

“It’s a terrible disaster. The Tynwald School bus, which had 45 passengers on board was involved in an accident, and so far six are confirmed dead. Five died on the spot and the other one on admission at hospital. Almost all the rest of the survivors were injured and taken to hospital,” said a police source privy to the accident.

“The accident occurred at Pine Tree Inn before Juliasdale. The bus was speeding and failed to negotiate a sharp curve, resulting in the fatal accident,” added the source.

Nyanga South legislator  Supa Mandiwanzira is one of officials who reportedly attended the scene last night.

Repeated efforts to contact Mr Mandiwanzira were fruitless as he was not picking calls.

More details to follow . . .
