MUTARE Sports Club (MSC) savoured another dose of rugby action in style when they clobbered Harare-based Southern City 27-5 in a friendly match at the weekend as they continue fine-tuning their squad in preparation for the Nedbank Challenge Cup.

After getting off to a scrappy start, the hosts sprang into life as the contest progressed to emerge victorious after a grueling duel.

This is MSC’s second successive preparatory victory after overpowering city adversaries Old Crestonians 22-08 in the previous match. They join seven other teams for the three-day rugby jamboree scheduled for this weekend in the capital.

Team manager Casper Bandi expressed satisfaction with how their preparations are going.

“We hosted Southern City at the weekend as we step up preparations for the Nedbank Challenge Cup. Our opponents made it difficult for us at the start and we had to dig deeper to prevail. The team is happy with the competition we got during the match and this really helps us to fine-tune the squad in readiness for the bigger assignment this weekend,” said Bandi.

He expressed confidence that they will go all the way and leave a mark at the Nedbank Challenge Cup competition.

The tournament is being used as a yardstick for Zimbabwe senior rugby coach Brendan Dawson to run the rule over some of the local players for consideration into the national team.
