SCORES of people this morning thronged Manicaland Motoring Club in Mutare to take part in the annual Zimpapers Cancer Power Walk.

The annual event, which has phenomenally grown over the previous years and now in its sixth edition, attracted people from all walks of life as all roads led to the venue.

It was running under the theme “Support Fight Against Cancer”.

Participants – comprising women, children and men – embarked on a 5km walk from Manicaland Motoring Club which took them through the city and back to the venue.

With most donning event-themed t-shirts and gear befitting the occasion, they exhibited great enthusiasm and excitement as some took pictures and shot videos of themselves during the procession.

Others joined and participated in the event virtually.

Back at the venue, the scores of people partook in a Zumba dance session conducted by a fitness trainer for over one hour.

As the organisers, Zimpapers also held a pop-a-balloon-and-win competition and many walked away with fabulous prizes courtesy of The Manica Post and Diamond FM.

Zimpapers also gave away some of their products like newspapers for free.

Participants interviewed by The Manica Post expressed delight to be involved in such an event, describing it as noble and impacting many people’s lives in a positive way.

“This is a noble initiative and I am excited to have been part of it. We hope that it will go a long way in fulfilling its intended purposes,” said regular participant Mrs Loreen Hove.

The Cancer Power Walk is an initiative between the country’s leading integrated media group Zimpapers, Island Hospice and Health Care and several other partners meant to raise awareness about the disease.

The proceeds are channelled towards the palliative care of cancer patients.

It also seeks to provide information and education about prevention and treatment of cancer, whose impact has been felt in many communities.

Similar events were today held in Harare, Bulawayo, Kariba, Gweru and Masvingo.
