TALKING about teaching passion, ability and administrative competence all in one? Talk about Moses Mukoyi, the St Faith’s High School head! This is a story that illustrates straightforward, uncompromising, exemplary dedication to teaching. This is breaking news from Makoni District.
THE 2014 BEST LITERATURE TEACHER MAKONI MERIT AWARD GOES TO MOSES MUKOYI OF ST FAITH’s HIGH SCHOOL.Here is a full email text from Mr Mukoyi briefly telling the good story himself after The Manica Post sought confirmation of the breaking news.
Hi Morris.

As you know, I am a teaching headmaster combining administration with teaching literature at A-Level plus co-ordinating NASH activities as SG plus consultancy in a number of organisations with an educational bias. Have taught language and literature for donkey years! Last Thursday (16 October 2014), I received a prize for Best English Literature teacher at the Makoni District merit awards.

I am not surprised this is of interest to you, especially as you rightly say, when you consider that nowadays heads do not teach, and that their subject specialisation is emasculated in administrative chores. I inherited this way of doing things during my St Augustine’s days from my mentors Daniel Pierce and Keble Prosser both principals and priests, the former teaching Language and Literature and the latter, History and Divinity.

They applied a priestly passion to their work. Their detractors said cynically that they had all the time in the world, being celibate and having committed themselves to vows of poverty, chastity and charity. Well, I have all the time in the world . . . family, headship and LITERATURE.

Response:
Well done! Makorokoto! The recognition was overdue Moses. Whoever thought of “discovering” your talent and ability, came second. I always knew you were one of the best. But then what would I give you? And even if I gave you something . . . may be a pen or pencil, who would build up the pomp and celebration?

Of course your mentor Father Prosser infected many with his inimitable administrative style buttressed by inexhaustible energy. I am not surprised that you are visibly driving St Faith’s along a path Prosser himself would enviously admire if he were around.

Not many teachers, let alone school heads, understand the real place of English Language and Literature lying inseparably in juxtaposition in the process of development of minds. I know you do and genuinely live that passion.

Breaking news Moses! I am contemplating publishing an educational newsletter soon. The idea is to provide free space for teachers, writers and school heads like you to take advantage of the publication and distil wisdom with students, teachers and other school heads in Manicaland and beyond.

What kind of a publication would my newsletter be without your sterling input? Please seriously consider the birth of this what I think is a grand idea. I will see you soon to help me structure and launch this paper.
One again MAKOROKOTO, Moses, for your accolade!
