THE police’s war against armed robbers continues to bear fruits following the arrest of two suspects in connection with violent robbery and shooting at Kriste Mambo High School (Rusape) late last year.
About 11 suspected armed robbers besieged the Roman Catholic-run and girls’ mission school that is located about 40 kilometers on the outskirts of Rusape.
One of the armed robbers pulled the trigger and shot the school’s deputy head, Mr Joseph Munhuweyi on the chest before stealing cash, school tuck, laptops and cellphones valued at over $2 million.
Mr Munhuweyi has since recovered from the injuries, after spending some time in hospital.
The long arm of the law finally caught up with Paul Munemo (38) and Godfrey Machangara (22), who all hail from Chief Seke’s area.
Detectives are working round the clock to arrest the pair’s accomplices.
The two suspects were arraigned before Rusape magistrate, Ms Rufaro Madondo facing one count of armed robbery and were remanded in custody to December 14, 2022, for routine remand.
Ms Mangwiro also advised the pair, who were self-actors, to apply for bail at the High Court.
Prosecutor Mrs Oripa Sagandira told the court that the suspects and their fugitive accomplices stole an assortment of goods valued over $2 million.
Only goods worth $900 000 were recovered.
“On November 7, 2021, the two accused persons connived with their accomplices who are still at large to rob Silvester Mubako, Lloyd Dimma, Temba Fokisa, Joseph Munhuweyi, Musumi Kitaka, Dionisio Antonio, Tatenda Gumbero, Abel Matamisa and Norest Guri.
“They armed themselves with two pistols and one riffle, and proceeded to the complainant’s place of residence. They shot Joseph Munhuweyi on the chest, and forcibly took seven HP laptops and several smartphones. They also stole a Toyota Hilux (AAL 6585), US$5714 and ZW$7160 from the complainants.
“The two accused persons were arrested and led to the recovery of one of the stolen smartphones as well as part of the other property. The value of property stolen is $2 227 500 and goods valued at $949 025 have been recovered,” said Mrs Sagandira.
