FAILURE to control her anger over polygamist husband’s extra-marital affair and setting him on fire will see a Chipinge woman being a guest of the State for 12 months.

Cecilia Chitambo (35) was convicted after a full trial by Chipinge regional magistrate, Mr Noel Mupeiwa last week.

Mr Mupeiwa sentenced Chitambo to 18 months imprisonment, of which six months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

Chitambo will serve an effective 12-month jail term.

She was facing attempted murder charges as defined in Section 189, as read with Section 47 (1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

Mr Themba Dhliwayo prosecuted.

It was the State’s case that on New Year’s Day, Chitambo, who is Fungai Nyazana’s second wife had a misunderstanding with her husband over infidelity allegations.

“The misunderstanding arose when Nyazana paid Chitambo a visit at their matrimonial home. When the misunderstanding became heated, Chitambo left and went to her parents’ home.

“She returned home the next day. Another misunderstanding erupted between the feuding couple over missing money. Chitambo disappeared for a while before returning home with a container filled with petrol.

“She doused Nyazana with petrol before setting him ablaze. Nyazana rushed to the kitchen hut, grabbed a bucket of water and tried to douse the fire,” said Mr Dhliwayo.

Nyazana was later rushed to hospital, while Chitambo was arrested.
