THE Maunganidze Irrigation Scheme in Chipinge District is undergoing rehabilitation following damage to the infrastructure when Cyclone Idai hit the area in 2019.

Construction of a storm drain is already underway with help from the Zimbabwe Idai Recovery Project (ZIRP) and United Nations Office of Project Services (UNOPS).

UNOPS associate engineer, Engineer Edmore Mutsavi, said they are implementing community-led initiatives and interventions.

“As UNOPS, we are playing an instrumental role in supporting the rehabilitation and construction of community infrastructure. As such, we have engaged local community members to construct a storm drain to protect Maunganidze Irrigation Scheme from flooding.

“Our responses are helping in rebuilding communities whose lives were affected by the devastating effects of Cyclone Idai which hit parts of Chipinge and Chimanimani,” said Engineer Mutsavi.

He said they will also install solar-powered pumps at Maunganidze Irrigation Scheme.

The three boreholes supplying water to 62.5 hectares under the irrigation scheme were also damaged.

This has left only one borehole functional.
