The onset of the 2020/21 summer rain season experienced in most parts of the country early this week resulted in floods that left a trail of destruction in Chipinge district.

Some villagers have been left homeless while a 63-year-old man, George Chiusavi of Chisavanye Village, died while trying to cross a flooded river.

Schools, roads and bridges were destroyed and Wards 22 and 23 were the most affected. Chipinge rural district Ward 22 Councilor Evely Mhuru confirmed the development.

“Four staff houses at Chisavanye Primary School were affected by the wind. All six classroom blocks were also affected, while the toilets flooded.

At Gumira Primary School, window panes was also destroyed.

“School authorities in the affected areas have not been making efforts to repair school infrastructure as the destroyed buildings were very old,” said Councilor Mhuru.

In Zamuchiya, a bridge along the Mukundingo stream was washed away such that villagers are finding it difficult to travel between Zamuchiya clinic, Zamuchiya Primary School and the business centre.

Chipinge assistant district development coordinator, Mr Tedious Beto said the district Civil Protection Unit (CPU) is raising awareness campaign at grassroots level to avoid loss life.

“We have activated our village disaster risk committees to be alert as the summer rain season has started. All villagers who are residing in flood prone areas are reminded to vacate the regions to avoid risks,” he said.
