POSSESSING 274 pangolin skins landed a Buhera man in trouble after he was trapped and arrested by members of the Chipinge Criminal Investigation Department on Monday. CID Chipinge spokesperson, Detective Assistant Inspector Vincent Chikuvadze confirmed the arrest of Munduna Marayiti (34) at Deure Business Centre in Buhera.Detective Assistant Inspector Chikuvadze said Marayiti is expected to appear in court later this week.

“Marayiti was arrested on Monday after being found in possession of 274 pangolin skins valued at US$2 000.

“On July 27, detectives received a tip-off that Marayiti was selling pangolin skins at Deure Business Centre.

They reacted to the information and presented themselves to Marayiti as potential buyers,” said Detective Assistant Inspector Chikuvadze.

Marayiti allegedly took 274 pangolin skins from his black satchel and showed the detectives. He was subsequently arrested for contravening Section 45 of the Parks and Wildlife Act. Detective Assistant Inspector Chikuvadze warned members of the public to desist from poaching and killing protected species as they risk a mandatory nine-year jail term.
