5 killed in Burma Valley accident

FIVE people were killed and 25 others were left seriously injured when a Mitsubishi lorry veered off the road and overturned several times before it landed on its wheels at the 54 km peg along the Mutare-Burma Valley Road yesterday.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident.

“The accident occurred around 10am. Five people were killed,” he said.

“A Mitsubishi lorry which was bound for Mutare had 30 people aboard including the driver. On approaching the 54km peg, the driver lost control of the vehicle while descending a steep slope. The truck veered off the road and overturned several times before it landed on its wheels. Five people died on the spot.

“The occupants were coming from a memorial service near the Mozambican border.”

He said those injured were rushed to Mutare Provincial Hospital while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the same referral institution’s mortuary.

Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi revealed the identity of the deceased.

“The names are as follows; Phillip Marondo (50), Pepeginas Chaipa, Sinikiwe Zingara, Irene Antonio and Brenda Maringise.

He appealed to motorists to observe road rules and regulations to avoid accidents.
