IN a bid to spread the game of volleyball and harness talent across the country, especially in rural communities, the Zimbabwe Volleyball Association (ZVA) last week gave equipment and kits to four clubs in Chipinge District.

Speaking during the handover ceremony at Tongogara Refugee Camp, ZVA president Mxolisi Ndlovu said the association is on a drive to unearth and polish the game’s future gems.

This is part of ZVA’s programme to spread its wings in the country and harness talent.

“Volleyball can grow into a big sport in the country if we put up proper structures to identify and train blossoming talent. We are taking volleyball to rural communities and their embracing the game is key in developing and promoting it.

“As an association, we are also particularly targeting the girl child and encouraging them to get more involved in the game,” said Ndlovu.

He urged the local communities to form more volleyball teams and participate in the game.

Tongogara Refugee Camp coach, Thomas Mangwiro, was grateful to ZVA.

He said: “We appreciate what ZVA has done in efforts to grow the game. We are also hopeful that in the coming year we will have more people turning to volleyball as a sport of choice.”

Volleyball is mainly played at school level, with many dropping out of the game owing to lack of active clubs.
