Some Chigodora, Mutare men recently assaulted their neighbour with bottles, bricks and stones over a US$20 note he had received from a friend at a nightclub.

Simpson Saburi is now nursing several wounds on his face, head and back after being attacked by a group of men as he was about to leave the nightclub.

He was also robbed of the US$20.

Saburi got 32 stitches on the head and face.

He is recuperating at home under the care of his elderly parents, Gogo and Sekuru Saburi.

The Weekender caught up with Saburi on Monday soon after his discharge from Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital and he narrated the events that led to the horror attack.

“I was in the nightclub having fun when a friend handed me a US$20 note as a token of appreciation for our friendship. Unbeknown to me, some thugs were watching my moves until l decided to visit the toilet around 3am.

“They followed and attacked me in the toilet. They used bricks, broken bottles and stones. They wanted to kill me for that small note. I was unconscious when they left me and I only woke up at the hospital the following day. I was in excruciating pain,” he said.

Saburi said he is yet to furnish the police with the names of his assailants as his memory was blurry when he was first interviewed at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital.

“I am now regaining my memory and I am recalling what happened on that fateful night. I vividly recall seeing the face of the gang leader (name supplied) looking straight into my eyes as I lay on the toilet floor. He was kicking me in the face,” he said.

Speaking to The Weekender, Sekuru Saburi said it is heart-rending that his son almost lost his life over a US$20 note.

He said word doing the rounds suggest that Saburi’s assailants are on the run to evade arrest.

“He was left for dead by the people who attacked him. He was found by another patron around 4am and I was called to attend to the scene. Together with his brother, we rushed him to Matondo Clinic where they immediately transferred him to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital.

“When I first saw him, I thought he was dead. It is a miracle that he survived because he lost a lot of blood,” said the elderly man.
