ST Dominic’s and Marist Nyanga High School came out tops in the ORATE public speaking competition held in Mutare recently.
The Roman Catholic Church Mutare Diocese-run schools shared the top spot after accruing 30 points.
The provincial competition was attended by 10 schools, including hosts, Mutare Boys’ High; the winners, St Dominic’s and Marist Nyanga; as well as Mutare Girls’ High, St Joseph’s, St Mary’s Magdalene, Vengere, First Class Academy, St Augustine’s and St David’s Girls High schools.
Mutare Boys’ High School headmaster, Mr Tendayi Gwashu said everything went according to script.
“I am happy that the competition came to fruition this year as it was last done in 2020. I applaud the schools for strictly adhering to Covid-19 precaution guidelines. Everything went according to the script and we want to congratulate all the winners,” said Mr Gwashu.
The competition saw participants battling it out in a quiz and spellings competition, as well as English and Shona public speaking.
Sharon Nyabata from St David’s Girl’s High School (Bonda) came out tops in the English public speaking competition, while Leeford Sowa of Marist Nyanga High School won the inaugural Shona public speaking competition.
Marist Nyanga High School, through Lesley Machimbidza and Thamsanqa Musasa, who were tied on pole position, scooped the spelling bee competition award, followed by Panashe Chafachaipa and Richard Matikari who were second and third respectively.
