ONE of the country’s leading banks, NMB Bank Limited recently marked the annual global money week with a financial literacy seminar at St Dominic’s High School in Mutare.

NMB Mutare branch manager, Mrs Sifiso Mutema said the visit to the school aligned with the fulfilment of the global money week 2024 theme to; “Protect your money, secure your future”.

The event saw learners being taken through monetary topics like financial literacy, entrepreneurship, employment, innovation, and global citizenship.

“As NMB, we joined the international banking community in marking the global money week. It was an instinctive decision to mark the annual celebration with learners as the school is one of our valued clients. They were welcoming and attentive throughout the interactive session, and I am happy that I managed to have a chance to educate them in a subject of my expertise,” she said.

In the eye-opening financial literacy seminar, the learners got more information on the 2024 theme and its aim to facilitate safe money management, and the importance of adopting a responsible and informed approach to personal finances by being aware of potential risks in the sector.

These risks include financial scams and frauds, phishing, money laundering, and online shopping scams, as well as risks related to data privacy, like identity theft.

Young people and teachers have fallen victim to financial frauds and scams due to their limited financial literacy and experience.

Isolated incidents of children at sports betting houses have been observed in Mutare in contravention of the Lotteries and Gambling Act.

According to the Lotteries and Gambling Act, people under the age of 18 are not allowed to gamble, and this is a prosecutable offence.

St Dominic’s High School deputy head, Mr Stanislaus Matongo said the bank’s visit showed a maternal love for the children.

“We are happy that the team visited us today and managed to engage our learners in an interactive session which saw them participating and gaining insight about the banking sector.

“We received important financial advice today and we are grateful to NMB for reaching out,” he said.

The seminar had prizes for learners to boost their fondness for banking and finance.

One of the learners, Gibson Mukoyi also walked away with a T-shirt.
