NEIGHBOURLINESS has evaded two Zimunya villagers after a woman dragged her neighbour to court, accusing him of stealing her beast.
Obert Nhanhanga (34) of Gosho Village under Chief Zimunya appeared before Mutare magistrate, Ms Prisca Manhibi, facing charges of stock theft as defined in Section 114 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
The complainant is his neighbour, Mrs Lucia Hauya (63).
Nhanhanga was remanded out of custody to December 2 on $10 000 bail.
Ms Tafadzwa Chiwanza prosecuted.
It was the State’s case that on an unknown date in September, Nhanhanga approached Mr Richard Ndima, a butchery owner at Chitakatira Growth Point in Gombakomba, and told him that he was selling a beast.
“The butchery owner expressed interest and the two exchanged numbers. Nhanhanga promised Mr Ndima that he would bring the beast and conclude the deal,” said Ms Chiwanza.
On October 6, Nhanhanga phoned Mr Ndima inquiring if the deal was still on, and the former advised the latter to prepare the money as he would deliver the beast the following day.
The court heard that on October 8, the accused went to the complaint’s homestead and borrowed her cattle for use to prepare his land.
He was given one.
Said Ms Chiwanzas: “Nhanhanga called Mr Ndima and told him that he was bringing the beast.”
However, Mr Ndima became suspicious, and tipped-off the police who set up a trap.
Nhanhanga was immediately arrested after delivering the beast.
Mrs Hauya positively identified the beast and it was returned to her.
