BODYBUILDERS from different parts of the country are taking their preparations a gear up ahead of the exciting Manicaland Classics Open pencilled for November 7.

More than 60 contestants in different categories are expected to strut their muscles before a panel of judges at a local hotel.

Tobias Pedzayi Madzime, the chairman for the Manicaland Classic 2021 edition organising committee, said: “We are expecting a total representation from across the country. We are looking forward to having bodybuilders from Bulawayo, Harare, Rusape, Marondera, Mutare and Masvingo to mention, but a few of the areas represented.

“All defending champions are expected to attend, and even those who came second or third in the last event. New bodybuilders are also expected to participate at this event because this is where champions are normally made.”

The former Mr Zimbabwe emphasised on the importance of partaking in regional contests for local bodybuilders.

Nunurai Masosonere won the heavyweight championships Manicaland Classic’s 2019 edition, while Blessing Saunyama won the Men’s Fitness Physique Category, and Lynette Thompson won the Bikini Fitness Model category.

Madzime said their list of the panel of judges was already in place.

“Our panel of judges will be drawn from our main Board of Judges of Zimbabwe. We do not want to disclose the names of the judges for purposes of fairness and transparency,” he said.

The 1999 Mr Zimbabwe recounted the losses encountered by the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has affected the sport in many ways. One of them being lack of sponsorship because many businesses closed, some even closed for good. The pandemic also resulted in loss of income to many athletes who include personal trainers, gym instructors, even the athletes themselves,” he said.

Madzime thanked sponsors who came on board to partner the event, and called on the corporate world to consider riding on the mileage that the sport offers.

“Our event coordinator is Simbarashe Dube. He has put so much in making sure this event will be a success.
Madzime, himself, donated the floating trophy for Manicaland Classic since 2019 to date.

“We have also negotiated for special rates with the hotel for those planning to attend the Manicaland Classic Open,” he said.

After the Manicaland Classics, Harare Classic, Bulawayo Classic and the main event, Mr and Ms Zimbabwe bodybuilding championship are expected to be held before year end.
