FOUR daring machete-wielding robbers were last week arrested for trying to steal gold ore at a claim in Penhalonga.

Last Teko (20), Freedom Mutakwa (20), Kainos Maphosa (25) and Takudzwa Nyakudya (24) were armed with machetes and catapults when they pounced on a gold claim intending to rob gold ore.

However, luck ran out for them when the complainant screamed for help.

The quartet appeared before Mutare magistrate, Ms Nyasha Kuture last Thursday and were not asked to plead.

They were remanded in custody and will be back in court on December 14.

The court heard that on November 29, the complainant, who is not named in the State papers, was asleep when the robbers pounced on him around midnight.

“The quartet approached the gold claim armed with machetes and catapults and broke into the room where the complainant was sleeping. One of the accused grabbed the complainant by the collar and asked him to tell them where the gold ore was.

“The complainant refused to divulge any information and was force-marched into a gold shaft. The complainant, however, shouted for help and the quartet panicked and vanished from the scene.

“The complainant made a report which led to the arrest of the quartet,” said Prosecutor Mr Brian Goto.
