Hilbright Science College held its eleventh Speech and Prize Giving Day on October 6, 2019 in Mutare. The occasion allowed the institution to perfectly show case how it is committed to the development of the mental, the physical and spiritual powers of its learners.

Speaking at the annual celebration of sterling achievements in the college’s pursuit of excellence, the guest of honour, Dr A Sora, acknowledged Hilbright’s visionary role in promoting science education.

“Your thrust in Science Education dovetails perfectly with the country’s thrust under the new dispensation to provide a conducive environment for the establishment of a sustainable technologically driven society,” he said.

Regarding girl-child empowerment, Dr Sora said his attention had been drawn to Hilbright’s girls-biased enrolment policy and the college’s use of gender sensitive instructional methods to demystify the learning of Science by girls.

‘This policy is in sync with the old adage that “If you educate a woman, you educate the whole nation,” he asserted.

At Hilbright Science College, learners have an opportunity to leave the institution not only with an O-level or A-level qualification, but also with either a Driver’s Licence, City and Guilds Certificate or Diploma in Engineering. This is in compliance with the new educational curriculum which places special emphasis on psycho-motor skills development.

The good doctor added that he was aware Hilbright’s former students were currently studying Medicine, Engineering and IT in China, Russia and India besides those studying in other areas.

“Indeed it is critical for Zimbabwe to afford its young people an international flair of education . . . your children will be active agents of innovation and technological transfer,” said Doctor Sora.

One other unique feature of Hilbright Science College is that it values the community it which it operates. The College, The Manica Post learnt, has implemented several corporate social responsibility programmes which are spearheaded by the Guidance and Counselling Department.

This is done in a quest to produce students that are well balanced academically, morally and with heart to positively make a difference in their communities.

The college has achieved numerous accolades in various areas of achievement; evidently excelling in relevance.

For the third year running, Hilbright Science College scooped the award for the best student in the World across three A-level learning areas; Math, Physics and Chemistry. In Zimbabwe, the college won awards in English, Accounting, Computer Science, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.

In May/June examinations, one of Hilbright’s candidates scored 20 points from Math, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science. The school also scooped first runners-up prize in the ZNCC Manicaland  2018 Annual Awards, held at Golden Peacock.

What a sterling performance from a God-fearing school!

The college’s infrastructural growth is visible even to passers-by. There are more buildings going up, among them more dormitories and a state-of-art dining hall with a capacity to hold more than 200 students.

Both the boys’ and girls’ hostels opened their doors to modern boarding facilities with two, three to a maximum of four students per room.

The 2019 Hilbright’s Science College Speech and Prize Giving Day clearly celebrated results of hard work, discipline, focus and parental support.

Special mention must be made of the visible team work amongst the teaching and ancillary staff and an admirable measure of administrative competence and leadership from the college Trojan horse . . . the tireless school head, Mr Beau Machingambi.

This year’s Speech and Prize Giving Day was attended by the Hilbright’s Board of Directors chairman, Mr Ben Deda, the chairman of Friends of Hilbright Committee, Mr Mahaso and committee members, the Director of National Science Education Development Trust, Chief Servant of Hilbright Science College, Mr Pardon Mugari and Mai Mugari, Provincial Education Director-Ministry of Primary and Secondary School, Mr Edward Shumba, Education school inspectors and British Council Exams Country Director.
