Soon after joining Chisumbanje based side Green Angels Netball Club early this year, Leona Masango was handed the arm band.

The 24-year-old now has a daunting task at hand to help the new girls make an impact in the Rainbow Amateur Netball League.

Before the national lockdown, Masango and her teammates had played three games, winning one and losing two.

She believes that when they get back to action, the team has the potential to turn the tables around.

“We are new in the league and I think it is too early to judge our performance. But despite a slow start, we hope to record more victories when we go back to the field of play.

“We have good players who are determined to win. We are definitely not underdogs. All we need to do is to believe in ourselves,” she said.

A talented player from an early age, Masango’s netball journey began at Shabanie Mine Primary School. She continued with the sport when she enrolled at Mandava Secondary School.

Masango then joined Platinum Queens as a junior player in 2018. She played for them for two years.

The year 2020 was a great one for the talented centre.

“I played for Platinum Queens juniors for two years. I then decided to join Green Angels so that I could gain more experience in the super league.

“It was not very easy to be handed the arm band as a new comer but every one supported me and made life easier for me. I am enjoying my stay at Green Angels,” she said.

Masango revealed that her biggest dreams are to play for the national team and to eventually attract foreign clubs.

“My dream is to play for the national team. I also want to play for the best clubs in world,” she said.

Masango applauded her team’s supporters.

“Our supporters are great. Their support have great impact on our morale and performance,” she said.

She also believes that Manicaland has great sports talent.

“There is great talent in Manicaland and Zimbabwe at large. In fact, our future is bright since the national team’s display at the World Cup in Liverpool,” she said.

Masango revealed that she is exercising every morning and evening to keep herself fit.
