A MUTARE man recently stunned the court after confessing that he stole a villager’s goat as he was craving meat and hungry.

Albert Sumburero (26) of Gosho Village in Chief Zimunya’s area appeared before Mutare magistrate, Ms Prisca Manhibi facing charges of stock theft as defined in Section 114 (2) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

Mrs Tino Muzondo prosecuted.

Sumburero, who has been on the run for the past four years, is also facing unlawful entry and assault charges.

“I stole the goat because I wanted to roast it. I was craving goat meat Your Worship,” he said.

The court heard that on May 24, 2018, Ms Tendai Shangwa of Gosho Village woke up after hearing a goat bleating outside.

“She opened the door and went out to investigate what was happening. Upon arriving at her goat pen, she noticed that only the kid was inside. The rope that had been used to tie her goat had been cut and the animal was missing.

“Shangwa notified her brother-in-law, Mr Lovemore Manase and his son, Lovemore Manase (Junior). The two followed the goat’s bleats and saw Sumburero skinning it. When Sumburero saw the two, he ran away.

“The value of the stolen goat is US$50 and only the carcass was recovered,” said Mrs Muzondo.

Sumburero is also facing charges of unlawful entry as defined in Section 131 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23 after he broke into Ms Petunia Musenyi’s locked house at Plot Eight, Nyamheni Farm in Vumba on March 10, 2022.

When Ms Petunia Musenyi confronted him, he stabbed her left wrist twice with an okapi knife. He was remanded out of custody and he will be back in the dock on May 16 and 17, 2022, for sentencing.
