CHIEF Mutasa has encouraged people in Mutasa District and Manicaland at large to get vaccinated for Covid-19, saying that pushing the numbers up in the province will ensure that the country achieves herd immunity.

Zimbabwe is targeting to inoculate 60 percent of its population, about 10 million people, by yearend.

The traditional leader’s remarks follow Government’s efforts that continue to see huge strides being made in the accelerated national vaccination programme.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa recently called on chiefs and village heads to help in the fight against Covid-19 by promoting vaccination as the virus was now ravaging rural communities.

This comes at a time the country yesterday took delivery of 800 000 more Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccines, with citizens being assured that everyone who wants the life-saving jabs will get them.

An additional 700 000 doses from the same manufacturer are expected today.

Health experts continue to encourage people to get inoculated, including pregnant and breastfeeding women as well as people with chronic illnesses.

The Zimbabwe Council of Churches has also urged its membership to shun safety pessimism and go out in their numbers to get vaccinated.

Zupco and private operators under the franchise have also joined the vaccination drive, with drivers, conductors and other staff getting the jab.

Meanwhile, the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe has approved the use of the single-dose Johnson and Johnson Covid-19 vaccine in Zimbabwe.

The dose becomes the fifth to be approved for use in the country after the Chinese Sinopharm and Sinovac, the Russian Sputnik V and the Indian Covaxin.
