THE 2019 Manicaland festive season started on peaceful and relatively bloodless with one person reported dead on Christmas Eve in a road accident in Nyazura.

The fatal accident occurred on Tuesday when a vendor was hit by a car and died on the spot.

Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed the accident which happened at the 24km peg along the Chivhu-Nyazura Road.

The victim was identified as Stella Chadyemhunga.

“The driver of a Honda Fit lost control of his vehicle and hit Stella Chadyemhunga. She sustained serious head injuries and died on the spot. The vehicle had four passengers on board, two of whom escaped with minor injuries,” said Insp Kakohwa.

The body of Chadyemhunga was taken to Rusape General Hospital for a post-mortem.

Insp Kakohwa urged motorists to be extra cautious when approaching populated areas during this festive season.

“Both motorists and pedestrians must be extra-cautious so that they do not fall victim to avoidable accidents or endanger other road users,” he said.

Insp Kakohwa said Manicaland had started the holidays on a relatively peaceful note without major accidents.

He said police would continue to maintain a heavy presence on the roads and bring to book all irresponsible road users.
