Currency reforms: Prices of basic commodities falling

In OK Mutare, one of the supervisors, who declined to be named as he is not authorized to talk to the press, said prices of many products had been reduced and were in the process of replacing the old price tags.rices of basic commodities have started falling as retailers respond to the tumbling of the exchange rate on the black market following the abolishment of the multi-currency system by Government last week.

“Prices of most basic commodities have gone down since the scrapping off of the multi-currency system. Our customers have not yet seen the changes because we are still in the process of changing our price tags,” he said.

The price of 2litres of cooking oil in OK was reduced from $27 to $25 while 2kg sugar now cost $10,15 down from $10.25. Two litres of Mazoe Orange Crush has also come down to $16,95 from $21 and a tube of toothpaste from $6,29 to $5,99. Gloria cake flour was also down to $16,89.

At Spar Supermarket, prices had also been reduced with a 2litre bottle of cooking oil now costing $14,99 from $27. Rice, which had increased to $22 for 2kg was reduced to $15.29, 2kg Washing Powder from $15.95 to $12.99, a pack of tissues reduced from $10.50 to $7.99 and 1kg powdered milk from $32.95 to $28.99.

Although Post Business could not establish the old pricing structure atTM Pick n’ Pay Supermarket,a 2kg of rice now costs $16,99, with 2g sugar costing $9,99, Mazoe $23,99, cooking oil is at $27,49 and a tube of toothpaste is at $5,99
