AS Government steps up efforts to formalise their activities as well as curb illegal dealings in minerals and protect the environment, all artisanal miners will soon be required to be registered, a Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Environment, Climate and Tourism has heard.

Reverse Bank of Zimbabwe Governor, Dr John Mangudya, told the committee that there are about 500 000 to 1.5 million artisanal and small-scale miners and only a quarter of them are registered.

He said a Statutory Instrument on the requirements for registration is being crafted and will soon be gazetted, adding that registered miners will undergo training on environmentally friendly mining methods and land reclamation.

Artisanal miners have over the years been a common feature in Manicaland Province where they operated in areas such as Chiadzwa, Chimanimani, Nyanga, Nyamukwarara in Mutasa and Penhalonga.
