Welcome to your Visual and Performing Arts weekly lessons brought to you by your favourite newspaper, The Manica Post.

I expect you to have an exercise book and a pen to write the work given as exercises.

 

Today our topic is on visual arts careers.

 

You are expected to be able to identify visual arts careers and their roles in society.

Visual arts are not only an academic subject done to create fun, it is also a career opportunity.

 

Today we will go through several careers that are directly and indirectly linked to visual arts.

 

Remember a career is a job a person takes up on in order to get income.

 

One can also acquire entrepreneurship skills to become self reliant.

Painters

Imagine how cars and buildings would look like without paint.

 

Painters apply paint to surfaces to enhance aesthetic qualities of buildings as a final finish.

It is a very important career in visual arts as it adds on to value to artworks.

 

Surfaces that can be applied with paint include walls, canvas, metals, wood, pottery and other objects.

 

Some painters spray paint whilst others use brushes, screen paint and many others.

Sculptors

A person who curves and creates sculptures is called a sculpture.

 

Dr Dominic Benhure is a world known Zimbabwean sculptor who works with stones to produce sculptures.

 

Sculptors can work with various materials that include metal, wood, paper and wire.

Usually sculptors use worthless materials by reusing them to produce artworks.

 

Sculptures such as the Zimbabwe bird and the Mbuya Nehanda statue are not only for heritage purposes but also aesthetic value.

Designers

In visual arts, designers produce designs by creating forms, patterns and structures of artworks.

 

Some are graphic designers.

 

Examples are those who produce billboards and logos.

Some designers prepare housing plans.

 

The use of technology is applied in designing artworks.

 

Some designers work for newspapers and designs the layout of the paper.

 

For example, the way The Manica Post is presented is part of a designer’s work.

Illustrators

Illustrators specialise in producing visual features to explain some content in the form of visual images.

 

Common examples of visual arts are anytime cards, advertisements, posters, shirts and many more.

 

They also create illustrations on books, posters and many more.

Animator

An animator is a person who makes animated films.

 

Animators work for film companies to produce cartoons and other animated artworks.

Task

Research on the following careers in visual and performing arts.

A curator, a photographer, an architect and a visual stylist.
