THE country’s leading logistics company, Swift has donated 75 wheelchairs to people with disabilities as part of its countrywide ‘Together In Motion’ 75th Anniversary campaign.

The campaign is a corporate social responsibility initiative which has seen a total of 75 specialised wheelchairs each valued at US$400 being distributed to people living with disabilities in 12 towns across the country.

After its launch, the distribution of the ‘Together In Motion’ campaign wheelchairs took place between August and November 2021.

Swift marketing manager, Mr Lee Gibson said after brainstorming on how to celebrate the company’s 75-year milestone in 2020, they zeroed in on buying and distributing 75 specialised wheelchairs.

“We are so involved in corporate social responsibility programmes and it is something that we engage on everyday as a company. The greatest gift that we thought we could give back is the gift of motion to those who were limited because of lack of wheelchairs.

“Working with Rotary International clubs since they already had such projects in motion, they told us that there were 25 000 people living with disabilities and in need of wheelchairs in the country.

Our 75 wheelchairs are a very small drop compared to the demand, but we managed to distribute and help the few that we could,” said Mr Gibson.

Speaking during a recent handover ceremony in Chipinge, the district social development officer, Mr Raphel Zongoro said the donation will go a long way in sustaining the beneficiaries’ daily needs.

Five wheelchairs and groceries were donated to PWDs in the town by the logistics giant.

District rehabilitation technician, Mr Tayengwa Chadura, also expressed gratitude and implored society to look after people living with disabilities.

He also urged other corporates to emulate Swift Zimbabwe’s benevolence.

“This is a noble initiative and as a community, we urge other business entities to extend their helping hand to homes and schools that house people with disabilities and ensure there is infrastructure that benefit them,” he said.
