RELATIVES of the 49-year-old Bernwin woman who died a fortnight ago at her next door lover’s house are not happy with the autopsy report which says she succumbed to hypertension.
Residents of Bernwin suburb in Mutare recently woke up to a suspected crime of passion when a married 57-year-old school deputy headmaster allegedly murdered his next door lover of three years and dumped her body by the roadside.
Nelson Tomu, a deputy headmaster at Nyamakarati Secondary School in Odzi, was arrested for the alleged murder of Cathrine Muisa (49).
However, the autopsy report seems to be exonerating him.
“Essential hypertension decompensated — Heart failure due to high blood pressure,” reads the clause on the cause of death on the autopsy report.
“We are not happy at all with the post mortem report but as a family there is very little we can do given the resources that might be needed to pursue this case. The circumstances were clear and we thought justice would prevail.
However, only God knows. One cannot just kill another human being like an animal,” said Muisa’s son, Knowledge Mutema.
Last week, Manicaland acting deputy police spokesperson, Sergeant Angella Chinjekure, said Tomu was arrested at Dangamvura Terminus in Mutare’s Central Business District while trying to run away.
“Laiza Chingozho (51), who was on her way to Chikanga Sports Field Market, discovered the deceased’s body lying in a pool of blood in the early hours of the day. She called Muisa’s son, Knowledge Mutema, who positively identified the deceased as his mother. The body was lying about five metres from her house on the roadside. It had a cut on the forehead. Mutema dragged the body to their home, covered it with a blanket and went to make a police report at Chikanga Police Station,” said Sergeant Chinjekure.
She said Muisa had $220, US$1 and a cellphone in her jacket.
“Her clothes had no bloodstains. The weapon used in the commission of the offence was not readily available on the scene,” she said.
The two lovebirds had been dating for three years.
“A tenant at Tomu’s house, Ms Joyce Kunaani, informed the police that the former approached her at around 3am saying the now late Muisa had fainted in his house. The accused asked her to inform Muisa’s relatives.
“Kunaani advised Tomu to call for an ambulance but he refused. Instead, Tomu took a wheelbarrow and dumped Muisa’s body by the roadside before fleeing from the scene,” said Sergeant Chinjekure.
Tomu is still in custody as the police conduct further investigations.
