SISTER independent primary schools in Mutare, Mutare Christian School and Cross Kopje Junior School recently held a home grown mini ‘Olympics’ at the Mutare Motoring Club.

Demonstrating a true spirit of educational comradeship, school directors and owners, teachers and students came together to express oneness of purpose through sporting.

Speaking to The Manica Post Mutare Christian School (MCS) directors Mr and Mrs Mawadzi said sharing educational warmth is vital in their private schools.

“We are pursuing the same goals of assisting government to offer quality education to young Zimbabweans and sporting is one way of interacting for a purpose-what purpose?

Hand-in-Hand, a knot of solidarity: From left…Mrs Margaret Mashayamombe and Mrs Rose Gezana (Cross Kopje) and in the centre Mr Gumisai Mawadzi.

The purpose of sharing ideas, educational warmth and vision!” said Mr Mawadzi.

The wife, concurred with her husband and expressed the matrix of numbers in sporting for their schools.

“We cannot compete fairly with large-population schools as our numbers are smaller-hence the formation of the Mutare Association of Private Schools (MAPS),” said Mrs Mawadzi.

MAPS comprises Mutare Christian School, Cross Kopje and Rock of Ages.

Rock of Ages, the third arm of the MAPS triangle was conspicuous by its absence in the mini ‘Olympics’ held on Friday at the Mutare Motoring Club.

Events constituting the friendly competitions were short-distance races; 75 and 100 metre dashes.

There were also 200, 400, and 800 metre races, high jump, long jump and relays.

Mutare Christian School collected 341 points collective against Cross Kopje’s 298 points in a free-spirited mini ‘gala’ where participation made every child and each school a winner.

The organisers of the competitions emphasised participation rather than winning.

Special mention of outstanding performance goes to the following future national athletes:

  • Sherley Nenhunzi (MCS)
  • Kadijah Kamanga (Cross Kopje)
  • Tyres Knife (MCS)
  • Shekai Dafana (Cross Kopje)
  • And of course the Hall brothers, Wesley and Brad (MCS) who were all-round stars.

“Some people think that private schools are rivals. We are not,” said MCS director, Mr Mawadzi. “We share ideas and wisdom needed to run our institutions. And these friendly competitions are testimony of that spirit of unity of purpose.”

The Manica Post wishes Mutare Christian School and Cross Kopje the best in their business of educating youngsters for a worthwhile future.

From this educational reporter listen to this: Your little schools are little candles throwing light into this weary world. You are doing a wonderful job. Said William Shakespeare: “How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a weary world.” May these few words find space and comfort somewhere in your hearts!
