THE late Bob ‘Headmaster’ Nyabinde’s illustrious musical career, voracious passion for art, lyrical ingenuity and interminable fight for life till breathing his last were enough nuggets to inspire veteran journalist and author, Munyaradzi Huni to pen a book in memory of the legendary icon.

Titled, The Headmaster With A Guitar: Bob Nyabinde, is a 380-page book that chronicles Nyabinde’s birth, humble beginnings in Sakubva, Mutare and rise to stardom in his life as a school head and career as a musician.

Nyabinde breathed his last on December 23, 2023.

Through his organisation, Legacy Diaries, Huni writes biographies and memoirs of the country’s heroes.

“No doubt Nyabinde remains a legend and his works deserved to be documented. He defied odds as a headmaster and loved his guitar in an era where music was regarded as a profession for vagrants. I was fascinated that Nyabinde would play the guitar on school assembly and in school.

“His passion for music was out of this world. We travelled to Mutare where he grew up. He nurtured his talent and career there. After suffering a stroke, he always emphasized on the importance of taking care of one’s health through undergoing periodical check-ups. He put up a big fight till his death. This inspired me to come up with such a biography,” said Huni.

He said he and partners such as prominent promoter and arts guru, Josh Hozheri, intends to have two book launches in Kwekwe and Harare.

They will be selling and marketing the books.

“We will make sure that the book reaches every corner of the country. We will have a media blitz and ensure that we market it everywhere. The book was printed at Lighthouse Print and it is divided into 11 chapters. The last chapter of the book was based on the last interview with him in September 2023,” he said.

Huni is currently writing two books, one of which is set to be officially launched in 2025.

Young Nyabinde acquired his primary education at Zamba Primary School in the sprawling suburb of Sakubva before proceeding to secondary school in the same suburb.

He obtained a teaching diploma at Mutare Teachers’ College.

He became a headmaster at several schools before resigning and venturing into music full time in 2007.

Part of his rich discography include Pane Nyaya, Chabuda Hapana, Terera, Zvinoita Hope, Wandikona, Samanyika, Kusiya Vana Vega, Ndiratidze Mumwe Chete and Kunge Kwaye.
