A 29-year-old Zimunya man will spend the next nine years in jail after stealing a beast worth $5 000.

Clive Munyarari was convicted on his own guilty plea when he recently appeared before Mutare magistrate, Mr Tendai Mahwe. Mr God’swish Dzivakwe prosecuted.

He said on February 14, Weaklaugh Duru, a cattle herder, drove his employer’s cattle into the pen and retired for the night. During the same night, Munyarari stole one of the beasts and sold it to Itai Godfrey Magwere.

On March 23, Duru spotted the stolen beast at Magwere’s homestead and approached him.

Magwere told Duru that he had bought the beast from Munyarari. He even produced the agreement of sale document. Duru reported the matter to the police, leading to Munyarari’s arrest.

In mitigation, Munyarari told the court that he wanted to take care of his family with proceeds from the sale of the beast.

“Your worship, I own two beasts and I am the breadwinner in my family. I committed the offence because I wanted to raise money to sustain my family and to take care of my parents,” said Munyarari.

“I committed a very serious offence Your Worship and I admit to the charges,” said Munyarari.
