FARMERS at Nyanyadzi Irrigation Scheme have started preparations for the sugar been planting season, with expectations for increased productivity and improved livelihoods high.

More than 50 hectares are expected to be put under the crop.

Farmers representative at the irrigation scheme, Mr Lovemore Pedzana said continued support for communal farmers from Government through inputs provision programmes will drive production up.

“We are getting into the sugar bean planting season and preparations are proceeding well. Farmers are clearing the land while others have started harvesting their maize crop. We are receiving support from Government through the provision of inputs and we are looking forward to a productive season,” he said.

Mr Pedzana added that canals at Nyanyadzi Irrigation Scheme are being rehabilitated and the exercise is nearing completion in a move expected to enhance efficiency.

He urged farmers to consider good varieties of the crop as a way of improving production and expand existing markets.

Sugar bean contributes significantly to the country’s gross agricultural production and also boosts food security at family, communal and national level.
