A 28-YEAR-OLD illegal panner on Tuesday died after a mineshaft he was mining in along Mutare River collapsed.

Police confirmed the incident which happened in Chief Mutasa’s area and said the late Luckson Nyakatsito (28) was trapped by a heap of gravel while panning for gold.

“Nyakatsito was trapped by gravel while in the midst of panning along Mutare River. He was in the company of his friends when the incident happened. His friend, Leonard Matake, together with other illegal panners, made concerted efforts to save Nyakatsito, but in vain,” said acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

His body was retrieved and no foul play is suspected.
