A 37-YEAR-OLD illegal gold panner died after a mineshaft he was mining in collapsed in Penhalonga yesterday.

Police confirmed the incident which happened in Premier Central in Old Mutare, saying the deceased, Casper Chiminya, tried to scream for help after he had been trapped, but his colleagues failed to save him.

Chiminya and his friends went to Premier Central to pan for gold and upon reaching the mineshaft, he entered inside and started working.

“After sometime, his neighbour and one of his friends heard him screaming for help. They tried in vain to save him. Gold ore collapsed on him and trapped him on the chest. He was later retrieved and taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival,” said Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Nobert Muzondo.
