MUTARE City Council intends to rehabilitate more damaged roads, procure water metres and geographic information system machines using part of the $1.6 million kitty expected from the treasury this week.

Town Clerk Mr Joshua Maligwa said the funds would go a long way in adding value to the city.

“When we crafted the 2019 budget, we were allocated $2.1 million for the fiscal transfer, and so far have received $461 000 out of which we utilised $361 000 to buy 100 water metres for different sizes and procured other GIS gadgets and reading machines.

“We expect to use the balance of $100 000 and another $1.6 million coming this week to rehabilitate a stretch of the road between Sakubva and St Joseph’s and constructing a 500-metre road in Murambi East which needs about $400 000.

“We had also budgeted to procure more water metres for the top hundred water consumers and the balance was going to be for GIS,” he said.

Maligwa, said council had made tremendous efforts in rehabilitating roads in the Central Business District (CBD) and high-density suburbs.

“The funds are important and they will go a long way in terms of adding value to the city.

“Government has already started following up on the progress, particularly after receiving the $461 000,” he said.

The development comes as good news to motorists particularly those in high-density suburbs like Chikanga where some of the roads are no longer trafficable.

Improvement has also been noted in Dangamvura where pot holed roads were resurfaced.

The council launched the road rehabilitation programme in 2018 which saw the rolling out of periodic and routine maintenance programmes to improve roads trafficability.
