NATIONAL Blood Service of Zimbabwe last week honoured some of the blood donors in Mutare for their continuous donations which have gone a long way in helping save lives.

The ceremony coincided with the World Blood Donors’ Day which is held annually on June 14.

The day is aimed at raising awareness on the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank volunteers for their life-saving gifts of blood.

A total of 56 people were honoured for donating blood 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125 times respectively. They received certificates and clocks.

Speaking at the event, NBSZ Mutare’s public relations officer Mr Nicholas Muparutsa urged more people, especially those above 16 years, to come on board and donate blood.

As the first person to reach the 125th blood donation mark in Mutare, Mr Muparutsa said he will not relent in his quest to help save lives through blood donation.

“I have been donating blood since 1983 when I was in Form Three at Sakubva High School. I just want to save lives. I have came across desperate cases where people will be in urgent need of blood and this has spurred me to continue donating blood,” he said.

This year’s World Blood Donors’ Day ran under the theme: “Give blood and keep the world beating”.

NBSZ non-executive director Mr Passmore Nyakureba, who has donated blood 25 times, said: “It is important for everyone to donate blood. Our major blood donors – school children – are currently on vacation and we should all stand up and be counted. A stitch in time saves nine.”
