Many if not most weddings are centred around the attire of the bride and groom and their entourage. But two equally important people are the bride and grooms mothers.
I have never thought this is an issue because most couples are given specific orders on the type of suit/attire wanted by their mothers. But I have been asked recently, by a couple about what is the best attire to buy for mothers of the bride/groom.
Here we go! I say a two piece outfit to start with. Whether it is a 2 piece dress and jacket or 2 piece jacket and skirt is the most appropriate. Colours should flow with the wedding colours. Having said that though, mothers age will play an important part when choosing the colour.
Colour – The smaller mother is, the lighter the colour. The larger or fuller she is the darker the colour or shade she should wear.
Length – The Length of the dress or skirt differs according to the style, but the best length is below the knee. If the outfit shows much of her calf, then make sure you buy her sheer stockings to wear with the outfit.
Hat – hats in whatever form are a necessary part of mother’s of the bride or groom. Whether it is a garden wedding or indoor wedding, buy mother a matching hat to her outfit. If it’s a garden wedding, get her a large sun hat. If it’s an indoor wedding, get her a small net side hat.
Gloves – gloves used to be a part of mothers wedding attire. This was always attributed to the “Queen of England dress” in another age of our nation. Now we follow an international fashion which says it is not necessary to wear gloves as the mothers of the couple or as the bride herself.
Shoes – If mothers are younger, a shoe with a slight heel looks better and more stylish. But if she is older and not comfortable, you can get her a shoe with a flat heel. But be careful that the style does not make her outfit look unstylish. Some flat older women shoes, look like school shoes.
Jewellery – no outfit is complete without jewellery. Matching fashion necklace, earrings and bracelet is all mother needs to complete her outfit.
Lingerie – Do not forget, mother needs something inside of the outfit. Depending on whether she prefers a Bra and Panty or a full piece lingerie, make sure you get her that also, to complete the outfit. No one will see the lingerie, so it’s not for others to see, it is for mother to feel feminine, young and appreciated.
Make-up and Hair – lastly, it would be so nice, if mother was also sent to have her hair styled special for the wedding. Also a little makeup depending on her age goes a long way and makes a big difference. Even if she does not appreciate make-up, powder and lipstick will not hurt anyone.
