TAFARA Makuyana was last weekend crowned Miss Chipinge in a closely contested battle of beautiful ladies with brains held in the farming town last weekend during the Chipinge International Exhibition and Fashion.
Abigail Tenda was the first princess, while Yolanda Manhenga was the second princess.
Tafara Makuyana was clearly over the moon with her victory.
“I am so happy to be crowned Miss Chipinge. It was incredible to be announced the winner. I never thought I would be Miss Chipinge, seeing that there was intense competition for the top gong. I am really excited,’’ a beaming Tafara said.
Tafara Makuyana is a fourth year student at Midlands State University studying History and International Studies.
Her parents, Justice and Maggie Makuyana, are very supportive of her. They encourage her to model and pursue academic studies as well.
“My parents are cool. They tell me to pursue my dreams and at the same time be alive to the demands of university life which is hectic but rewarding,’’ she added.
“We all ran one race, but not everyone can take the crown home. As models, we were one happy family right up to the time we bade each other goodbye. It was a life changing experience for most of us,’’ she said.
There were seven models from different parts of the country. Four came from Chipinge, two came from Mutare and one came from Gweru.
In an interview with The Weekender, Tafara said modeling was not all about physical beauty as the latter is only skin deep.
“Modeling isn’t about being beautiful, but one must create something for people to admire. Leadership is not about titles, positions or flow charts, it is about one life influencing the other,’’ said Tafara. DJs Khosa and Quincy serenaded the crowd. Ashirai Mawere, the coordinator of CHIEF, was ecstatic as he felt the event was a success.
“I am ecstatic. Everything went according to plan. I would like to thank all partners who made the day a success. These include, FACT, Carex Zimbabwe, De ‘Plaza Lodge, Chipinge Town Council, Goldfields owners, Nyaradzo Chadambuka and the models themselves. In fact, I thank all people who made the day great.
“We will a prizes presentation ceremony soon. We have proved that when people work together, success is the winner. 2018 should have a bigger and better CHIEF,’’ he concluded.
Drum majorettes from Chikore High School entertained the crowd. Chikore head, Stella Mudiwa, said there was need for schools to be innovative and embrace the new curriculum.
“Students have different aptitudes and our duty as educators is to identify a student’s strength and hone it to perfection.
“As Chikore High School, we are pleased to be walking hand in glove with the inceptors of the new curriculum. We are proud to be associated with CHIEF as it enabled us to showcase our students’ skills,’’ she said.
Earlier, one of the partners, Winnie Chinheya, the proprietor of De’ Plaza Lodge said CHIEF had brought business to the tourism players in Chipinge and she had hosted the models at her lodge as a way of partnering the CHIEF organisers.
“I started this business in 2012. Since then, I have never looked back.”
