Dear Tete
I am 32 years old and HIV positive. My status came to light last year after I fell ill and was advised by my doctor to get tested. My problem is now that I have a girlfriend whom I love and respect dearly, but I have not disclosed my status to her. I really love her, but I am afraid of losing her love and respect. Sometimes, I think that I should just keep it a secret, but then a part of me feels guilty.

Tete Responds:
Not only is it a criminal offence to knowingly infect a person with HIV, but it is also morally wrong. How do you take the right to jeopardise one’s health into your own hands and live a happy life. Do not put yourself in a lifetime bondage by breaking the trust that your lady friend has in you. You should be discussing issues about sexual and reproductive health and also testing and counselling. Find out what her views are about HIV and if she is willing to go with you for a test. The discussions will give you an idea on how your partner will respond to you disclosing your status to her. Speak to a professional counsellor for guidance as to how you can reveal your status.
All the best
