A MUTARE taxi driver is lucky to be alive after he was assaulted and left for dead by a knife-wielding couple which made good its escape with his vehicle and US$560 on Sunday.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luxson Chananda confirmed the incident which happened in Yeovil.

Mike Chiwara was parked at Metro Peech and Browne Wholesalers waiting for clients when the couple, whose identity is yet to be established, approached him.

“They asked him to take them to Yeovil where they promised to settle the taxi fare. On their way, one of the accused produced an Okapi knife before assaulting Chiwara. They threatened to stab him and asked him to surrender the money in his possession.

 

“He surrendered US$560 and was shoved out of the vehicle. The couple drove off in Chiwara’s Honda Fit vehicle towards Chikanga,” said Inspector Chananda, adding that investigations are in progress.
