AS part of their efforts to raise awareness on litter disposal, Arising and Shining Ministries, Penhalonga Assembly, has embarked on clean-up campaigns in and around Penhalonga.

The assembly, headed by Pastor Rodreck Mwaturura, also donated six litter bins to Mutasa Rural District Council.

Last Saturday, the ministry managed to raise awareness through holding clean-up campaigns at Redwing Mine, Penhalonga, Liverpool, Old West, Penhalonga Shopping Centre and Penhalonga Police Camp.

In an interview, Pastor Mwaturura said they had partnered with the local authority to ensure that waste was being managed well from generation to disposal.

He said it was their duty as a church to conscientise the community on the importance and benefits of keeping the environment clean.

Pastor Mwaturura said Penhalonga residents welcomed the church’s initiative of raising awareness campaigns in and around Penhalonga.

“The response from the community was overwhelming. People joined us and we cleaned together because it was everyone’s wish to see Penhalonga clean.

“Our ministry will also be donating bins and protective clothing to the councils as they are in urgent need of them. Our next destination is Mutare, mainly bus termini and public places that usually accumulate a lot of dirt and dump sites. We appeal to everyone to desist from dumping litter,” said Pastor Mwaturura.

He said this move comes at a time when there was massive land degradation and environment pollution by the communities.

“The event is also a challenge to all churches as it is not the job of the Arising and Shining Ministries congregants, EMA and City Council to keep the city clean.

“Typhoid and cholera are diseases that are caused by uncleanliness and it should be a challenge to everyone out there that we have to keep our city clean to avoid these diseases. How can we preach the good news while our parishioners are dying of typhoid?”asked Pastor Mwaturura.
