POLICE in Penhalonga on Tuesday arrested a Ruwa woman who pretended to be a parent and allegedly intruded into Hartzell High School female hostels with the intention “to steal a learner”.

Norah Mavhu (26), who is a vendor in Ruwa, took advantage of the trooping in of parents and guardians to the school to pick up their children on closing day to sneak into the hostels.

However, Mavhu ran out of luck when the school matron, Ms Ronica Makunike sensed danger when she spotted Mavhu in the girls’ hostels and quickly raised alarm.

Police reacted swiftly and attended the scene, leading to Mavhu’s arrest.

Ms Makunike spotted Mavhu as she entered the female hostels the she sat on a Form Three girl’s bed. Upon being quizzed on what she was doing in the room, Mavhu lied that she had come to collect one of the learners since it was the closing day.

When she was further interrogated, Mavhu, who is a former learner at the school, changed her story and said she had come to collect a book that she left at the school in 2015.

She could not give the title of the book or who she had left it with.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed Mavhu’s arrest, and said investigations were in progress.

He said Mavhu was expected to appear in court yesterday (Thursday) on charges of unlawful entry into premises as defined in Section 131(2) (e) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9: 23.

“Mavhu is a vendor in Ruwa. She did her secondary school education at Hartzell High School in 2015. On March 26, at around 4pm, Mavhu went to the school and approached a 15-year-old Form Three female learner.

“She asked her about how a parent or guardian could collect a child since schools had been closed. The learner advised her to first seek permission from the matron, Ms Makunike. The accused followed the learner into the female dormitory and sat next to her bed. While they were conversing, Mavhu was called by Makunike who quizzed her on what she was doing with the girl,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
