TEN new housing units were on Tuesday commissioned at ZRP Support Unit Changadzi in Chimanimani, easing accommodation blues that were affecting police officers who had to commute for long distances to work.
Officer Commanding Support Unit, Dr Angeline Guvamombe, said the housing shortage was suppressing optimal performance.
“The desire to expand our services to the community we serve has brought with it some challenges in the form of shortages of accommodation to our members. In view of this critical need as Support Unit we resolved not to fold our hands and wish the challenges to pass,” she said.
“This resolve led to the mobilisation of financial resources from our various income generating projects in a bid to come up with solutions to ameliorate the accommodation challenges. The result has been wondrous.”
Dr Guvamombe said shelter was a basic human need.
“It is the one that gives us the inspiration to satisfy all our other needs. The completion of the housing units shall go a long way in lessening the accommodation crisis of members. Some of our members are lodging as far as Mutare and Chipinge commuting each day while some are accommodated in the vicinity of the local growth point. The scenario is tremendously affecting operations of the district.”
She said a lot of sacrifices were made to construct the houses.
“Apart from the financial contributions that are as follows; Changadzi district $44 600, Support Unit province $77 000 to make a total of $121 600, I want to acknowledge the efforts of officers who contributed immensely through brick moulding as well as the construction section team who selflessly rendered their expertise. To complete a project of this nature is nothing like shooting fish in a barrel. It calls for undisputed dedication and commitment from all concerned stakeholders.”
