HORDES of athletes descended on Mutare on Tuesday as the Zimbabwe Teachers’ Colleges Sports Association Zone A Games roared into life on Tuesday at Mutare Teachers’ College. The Games will run till Sunday. Athletes from the five teachers training institutions in Zone A will be battling it out to qualify for the ZITCOSA National Games to be held in Masvingo from May 24 to 29.

The Zone A colleges at this event are Mutare Teachers’ College, Marymount Teachers’ College, Masvingo Teachers’ College, Morgenster Teachers’ College and Bondolfi Teachers’ College.

Athletes are set to compete in athletics at Sakubva Stadium, while soccer (men), handball, softball, rugby and basketball will be held at Mutare Boys High.

Netball and volleyball will be played at Mutare Polytechnic, while women soccer, lawn tennis and Karate will be hosted by Marymount Teachers’ College.

Other disciplines slated are cricket, hockey, darts, pool, chess and table tennis.

In an interview on Wednesday afternoon, a day after the games had started, chairperson for Zone A ZITCOSA Games, Joshua ‘Zesa’ Matume thanked the officials for making the event a success.

“The guest of honour for the event will be Daniel Kuwengwa from Sports and Recreation Commission. We are thankful to the principal of Mutare Teachers’ College, Jason Muwandi and his entire college staff and student who have been supportive as the host.

“We started so well and all the five colleges have represented themselves well. The 15 disciplines available have been well represented as well.

“There was a colourful match from Quest Motors to Sakubva Stadium. The students represented their colleges very well. It was a good experience to witness.

“On events that are taking place, we have 15 disciplines. We are expecting to come up with the best squad which will well represent us as a zone in Masvingo,” added Matume.

Successful teams are expected to proceed to Zimbabwe Tertiary Institutions Sport Union Games to be held in Bulawayo from June 17 to 26 at National University of Science and Technology.

“From ZTISU, we proceed to CUCSA (Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sport Association) to be held from July 30 to August 6. Zimbabwe is hosting this event and it will take place in Bulawayo. This stage involves more than 14 African countries, therefore we are expecting this zone to have representatives at the highest level of the competitions,” said Matume.
