POLICE in Rusape on Wednesday arrested the Zanu-PF Manicaland youth league’s secretary for education Kudzi Madhara on five counts of fraud charges.Madhara handed himself to police in the company of lawyer Mr Taurai Khupe, of Khupe Chambers Legal Practitioners.

He was expected to appear in court yesterday (Thursady) on initial remand.

The Officer Commanding Rusape district chief superintendent Garikai Gwangwawa confirmed the arrest, adding that Madhara, who was detained at Rusape Urban Police Station, was expected to appear in court today (Thursday).

Chief Supt Gwangwawa said Madhara violated Section 136 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform Act) Chapter 9:23 which makes it an offence for any person to make a misrepresentation (a) intending to deceive another person or realising that there is a real risk or possibility of deceiving another person; and (b) intending to cause another person to act upon the misrepresentation to his or her prejudice, or realising that there is a real risk or possibility that another person may act upon the misrepresentation to his or her prejudice; shall be guilty of fraud if the misrepresentation causes prejudice to another person or creates a real risk or possibility that another person might be prejudiced.

“We arrested him on fraud charges after misrepresenting to prospective students that he would facilitate vacancies for them at various colleges when he had no capacity to do that. Five prospective students, who paid between $250 and $300 have lodged complainants and the docket is ready to go to court,” said chief Superintendent Gwangwawa.

Mr Khupe said his client was denying the allegations.

“They recorded a warned and cautioned statement from him in which he denied the allegation. He is facing five counts of fraud involving $1 420. Police have promised to take him to court on Thursday,” said Mr Khupe.

The ZANU-PF Manicaland youth league has since suspended Madhara for allegedly duping desperate prospective students of amounts ranging between $250 and $300.

The party has launched its own investigations into the unfolding scandal after having been approached by several complainants.

Madhara blames his predicament on political sharks circling around him on suspicions that he had interests in the Makoni Central seat.
